Microalgae CO2

By Pilar Portero
Algae that transform carbon dioxide emissions into oxygen through photosynthesis. Imagine the possibility of combustion gas-fired power plants emit a legion of hungry microorganisms, which can then be used as biofuels. Sounds like science fiction but there is already a pilot plant in Almeria. And tu2is been there.
The catedrárico Emilio Molina with buckets on microalgae grown
There are over 100,000 species of algae, of which only have been studied 50, with an enormous capacity to create oxygen. It was logical that an electric-power companies are responsible for 40% of CO2 emissions, one of the first companies to embark on this ambitious project. Endesa, together with the University of Almería , Leia AITEMIN and endeavored in 2006 to pilot the cultivation of microalgae in the coal power plant in Carboneras, on the edge of the sea. The idea is that microalgae capture the CO2 from flue gas through photosynthesis and convert inorganic carbon into organic . A biomass resulting from the process could be harnessed using it in the production of biofuels such as diesel, chemicals and fertilizers. Does not sound bad.

Initial tests were carried out with fresh water to verify the ideal conditions for survival and optimize the uptake of carbon dioxide. Last year was replaced by salt water fresh water, a step towards a return on investment. "Right now the production of a kilo of seaweed costs 5 euros and a profit would be achieved at 0.50 cents" says Emilio Molina, Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Almería involved in the project. In the 1,000 square meters occupied by the plant, some reactors have been installed facing south to take advantage of the intense sun of Almeria and keep algae at the required temperature to multiply. "The acreage to qualify for benefits should be much greater. When moving from the experimental stage to actual production, the Southern Cone, for example, offers the appropriate conditions for -scale implementation," said Juan Carlos Ballesteros, deputy director of R & D Generation Endesa.
The 'command Alga' in the central part of which CO2 Carboneras eat up algae
The process is curious and hopeful. Carbon dioxide emitted during power generation is transferred to plant cells of algae attached to the power plant. In these reactors, water enters the sea using the same socket that is used to cool the plant. Devour microalgae CO2 they need for photosynthesis, growing and multiplying. Residents were then collected and centrifuged the aqueous solution in which they have grown to separate the biomass of sea water. Is to achieve the challenge of developing the biorefinery concept. For what it already is expanding the plant in which test new technologies to minimize energy consumption and optimize the use organic matter. In 2015 is expected to end the experiment. "Initial estimates indicate that it could produce between 150 and 300 kg of oil biodiesel per hectare and day" , according to Endesa. It only remains that the results are positive and culture spread.

Gajes addicted to campaign: The bruises of Soraya and Chacón autographs

By Pilar Portero
are days of being Shagged, besuquear and what it takes. Politicians mingle with potential voters and must win them on the street. The characters reveal to us the highlights of his tour and his meetings.
Chacón
can not hide how well they step in Tomelloso
"In Isla Cristina went to a fish auction and revolutionized the market, gave us a box of shrimp and we became very good in the AVE with the stock dropping a liquidillo thread. In Huelva rally made us sing and Prat de Hospitalet, a gentleman gave us apples and artichokes in your garden, excellent. In the meetings we usually come back with bags of local produce, "he tells me Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría while Maria Pico, his chief of staff, shows me a photo of José Luis Ayllón the evidence in hand. "I do not know what they were rich artichokes ", adds the secretary general of the EPP group. From January to May 20, Soraya will be made 70 starts. And many of them performing various acts. Last Friday, was in five meetings: Córdoba, Puente Genil, Montilla, Antequera and Atarfe.
Ayllón with bags of apples, as Soraya says
No meeting without photos. "You can make more than 500-points María Picó Soraya, and repeated on a lot 'are more beautiful the natural on TV.' "But getting a snapshot with a famous politician at a rally calls for fight with the other hundreds of people who do not think there without leaving evidence that they have kissed the leader. Live witness is tremendous. Shoving, elbowing and long wait to finally grab the politician and not released. "I have a bruise on the inside of each arm, for holding me to hold me. Do not know how it hurts, always crowded at the same place" recognizes Soraya, who also appreciates the warmth of the fans. "It's a good sign that surround you."

Carmen Chacón, is part of laughter, recalling the meeting Monday in Tomelloso: "It was very fun, for everything. The site was a wedding hall that was called Epilogue and agreed Cospedal at another rally there next . Valera, our candidate for mayor of Tomelloso Cospedal said that while he had to take half the people pay it, he's only had asked to come, a signed photo for my . Very good. "You can tell the politicians campaign batteries and puts them to feel enveloped in the warmth of the militant provokes a rush of self-esteem. To Jáuregui, Minister of Presidency, the best thing is the affection of supporters. I would also kiss, hug them and give them encouragement . The rally is an area prone to the fraternity. "Ángel Gabilondo also choose the distance short, citing the rally in Plaza de Marratxi (Palma de Mallorca) and one that you liked: "Outside, surrounded by people, talking about education and the mayor of PP there close."

They come to those who can the nostalgia, as Valeriano Gómez, Manuel Chaves, José Antonio Alonso and Gaspar Llamazares . "I remember especially the meetings of 77, the first, for what they meant, evokes the illusion ...", Chaves. "I was very touched a rally in Baeza Leocadio Marín-historical and current socialist mayor of Baeza," about her figure and that 30 years later we are back to being together at a rally. And that for me, best part is when people stop you, kisses, hugs you, it takes pictures. is a morale booster "said Valeriano Gómez, labor minister, who in their day to day should receive a few compliments. Alonso, Socialist spokesman in Congress, with its story goes back to the 2004 campaign," in inaugural meeting, my predecessor at the microphone was shorter than me and left the microphone to his height. When you start talking, I did not realize until I see the hand gesture and move in the bleachers and fell where there was not a damn. "And Llamazares bullfighter gets when viewing such an act" in an arena surrounded by wheels car in which leaders were focused on nursing before leaving the ring. Just missing the cape and his cap. "

The furious pace of the rallies and be received in praise of crowds, causing some ego being shot and dare to venture that his most memorable meeting will be next, as Pepe Blanco: "The best rally will be tonight at Langreo because I will give right angle to the right" , loose bully in reference to the coincidence with another event in Oviedo Rajoy. The other end, Rosa Aguilar, Minister of Environment and Agriculture, as manifested in emotional super: "The meetings always have a special flavor. Children always give that flavor. Cordoba I was thrilled when I brought pictures of mine as mayor ... and older people when they to tears. I'm very sentimental. "Others like the popular Ana Pastor, it is up to practice their knowledge, as in the meeting that took place in Madrid Rajoy on Sunday 8 :" The rally Mariano a man had a syncope, a voltage drop, and I had to meet along with two other doctors. Then I sent him to the hospital to stay calm. "

I leave you with one of the jokes in the Comedy Club plan to enliven their meetings Soraya:" With this government, everything can get worse. May end up asking us to go to 67 km / h and we retire to the 110 ".

Press Dossier 2010. Fire Maneuver Zaragoza

Another year has been released Press Pack all the articles printed in the Journal of Aragon and the Heraldo de Aragón. Our colleague Mark Shepherd, as in previous years has been commissioned to cut the daily press to perform this dossier. A good reference to help us remember over time some of the incidents which occurred in the city and put date (as we get older). Clearly not all because, as we all know, only 5% are published in the press.

A great effort This year has been a major challenge and that is endangering its continuity in time thereafter.
